What is SPF?

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of a sunscreen's ability to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation. It indicates how long the sunscreen will protect you from sunburn compared to not wearing any sunscreen at all. For example, if you normally get sunburned after 10 minutes in the sun without protection, an SPF 30 sunscreen theoretically allows you to stay in the sun 30 times longer without burning, approximately 300 minutes.

There are various types of SPF available on the market, ranging from SPF 15 to SPF 100+. The higher the SPF number, the greater the level of protection it offers against UVB rays, which are primarily responsible for causing sunburn. However, it's essential to note that SPF does not measure protection against UVA rays, which can cause long-term skin damage and contribute to skin ageing and skin cancer. Look for broad-spectrum sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB rays for comprehensive sun protection.

Recommended SPF for Sunscreen

The recommended SPF (Sun Protection Factor) for most people is SPF 30 or higher. SPF 30 sunscreen blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. While higher SPFs offer slightly more protection, the difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is minimal. It's more crucial to apply sunscreen correctly, reapply it frequently, and seek shade during peak sun hours for effective sun protection.

Importance of Broad Spectrum Sunscreen

Broadspectrum sunscreen is necessary because it provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays primarily cause sunburn and are associated with skin cancer risk, while UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, causing premature ageing and also contributing to skin cancer. Using a broad spectrum sunscreen ensures comprehensive protection against both types of UV radiation, reducing the risk of sunburn, skin damage, premature ageing, and skin cancer. Therefore, when selecting sunscreen, it's essential to choose a broadspectrum formula to safeguard your skin effectively against the harmful effects of the sun.
